Job Opening: Museum Director

The Museum Director is a part-time position which requires a varied skill set and a creative outlook. It requires both a fun approach to working with children as well as a disciplined approach to managing an organization. Currently, the Director is the only paid employee of the museum. The ideal candidate will thrive in an environment with diverse demands and be capable of wearing “many hats.”  The museum is an educational and cultural institution which serves the three counties (Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan) of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Its mission is to provide an interactive and engaging environment that immerses children and families in the history and culture of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and its importance to the founding of our nation. For The Kids, By George, Children’s Museum shares space with the City of Martinsburg-owned Caperton Station Multimodal Transportation facility. The museum is currently open on Saturdays to the general public and on weekdays, by appointment, for field trips.

The Director will be required to perform the following:

Operations Manager

  • Acts as hands on manager of museum facility
  • Opens/closes/secures exhibit areas
  • Manages cash register and ticket sales
  • Maintains inventory of ticket office/gift shop
  • Maintains set up and condition of exhibit areas
  • Coordinates with City officials as to issues concerning building upkeep and use

Tour Guide/Facilitator

  • Provides orientation to visitors and describes museum offerings
  • Schedules and coordinates group field trips
  • Recruits and trains volunteer docents
  • Documents visitor demographic characteristics to determine grant funding eligibility

Fundraiser

  • Initiate and coordinate all fundraising activities
  • Research grant opportunities and apply for such accordingly
  • Work with the Board to create ideas for fundraising events
  • Marketing and Promotions Manager
  • Develop contacts with local media outlets
  • Promote museum activities and events
  • Maintain social media presence and use to engage the community
  • Present to community group meetings to educate them about the museum

Financial Manager

  • Develop budget and maintain controls to adhere to spending parameters
  • Provide Board with cash flow analysis and financial projections
  • Manage grant awards and associated financial controls and reporting
  • Maintain bank accounts and on-line bookkeeping system
  • Prepares and administers employee payroll
  • Submits all required State and Federal tax and employment filings

Museum Board Manager

  • Schedules and facilitates monthly meetings of the museum volunteer Board of Directors
  • Prepares Agenda and Minutes of each meeting
  • Works with Board to develop goals and objectives of the museum vision
  • Works with Board to create fundraising projects and other initiatives

The position is part-time at 24 hours per week with an hourly pay rate of $20 per hour.
